Every year the University of Western Australia (UWA) receives more than $170 million of external research income and has more than 300 higher degree-by-research students completing their degrees, mostly as PhDs. Innovation underpins all of our research activity, and transferring technology from UWA into the global marketplace is the mechanism by which we seek to make a difference.

Since its establishment in 2001, UWA’s Office of Industry and Innovation (OII) has invested time and funding in early stage UWA technologies; successfully linking researchers and their projects with industry. To date the OII has received nearly 300 invention disclosures, applied for close to 90 provisional patents, and commercialised these technologies through a range of licences and assignments to existing or newly formed companies. The OII’s expertise in the commercial marketplace helps to support UWA’s ongoing research activities.

The OII has also linked UWA researchers with industry to conduct sponsored research. In this regard, the OII has contributed to securing more than $42 million of research funding for UWA from research partners worldwide.

Successful commercialisation of UWA technologies provides returns to both the researchers and UWA. So far the OII has brought in more than $7 million in revenues from licensing and cash exits. Numerous UWA inventors have benefitted from our support and UWA’s generous revenue sharing policy.

In addition, the OII has been involved with the formation of 14 spin-out companies. These efforts have resulted in socio-economic benefits, including an estimate of 86 new jobs in Western Australia and elsewhere, plus annual revenues generated by these spin-out companies of around $13 million.
